A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to get out to Sarah Bouchard Gallery in Woolwich (out past Bath along Rte 1) to see her new show, to-morrow, the world answers everything - Andrew Hayes + Tom Phillips which is a Paean to the Page, as I see it. It only runs until May 18th, so give the gallery a call and book an appointment to see this work.
Bouchard is showing some remarkable work that centers itself on books and the printed page. Here are my favorites from Hayes, an Asheville NC sculptor. All images are by Steve Mann who did a wonderful job photographing the work, but you really must see it in person if you’re here in Maine.
These steel and book sculptures are like nothing I’ve seen before and work together so beautifully. The ARE amazing.
Also amazing are the works by Tom Phillips crafted from the pages of a long forgotten Victorian novel that he picked up for three pence. A Humument, began in 1966 and influenced the work of this London-based artist for the next sixty years. You will also see pieces from Phillips’ stunning reinterpretation of Dante’s Inferno, again based on book pages. These were my favorites from A Humument:
AND don’t forget the UMVA show Washed Away, at the Portland Public Library’s Lewis Gallery from May 2nd to June 21st. While I will not be at the May 2nd opening (traveling to visit friends and relatives on the West Coast), I will be at the curator’s talk with Carl Little on June 6th at 5:30. Hope to see you there!
Ann, thank you for the images of these wonderful pieces.
And safe travels!
